Town elders attempt to dispel the friction between John Winthrop and Thomas Dudley.
August 3, 1632
In a day-long meeting in Charlestown, Revs. John Maverick, John Warham, Thomas Weld, John Wilson and magistrate Increase Nowell attempt to mediate the difference between the two men. Dudley charges Winthrop with abuse of authority and excessive leniency. Winthrop defends his actions as being for the good of the colony. Both men make some concessions and the relationship is improved by the marriage of Winthrop’s daughter Mary to Dudley’s son Samuel, but Winthrop later writes, “some differences fell out still now and then.”
